I decided to do a healthier spin on Tso Chicken today using my oh so handy instant pot. For those of you who have ordered this dish before, you know that it is the perfect mix of sweet and sour. If you’re wondering what exactly this dish is, don’t worry I’ve included a little section below to explain. General Tso’s chicken is a favorite, one that everybody loves. This spicy Chinese takeout favorite is simple and quick to prepare with just the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. Serve: We like to serve this over rice, sprinkled with green onions and sesame seeds. This Instant Pot General Tso’s Chicken is the perfect, healthy, homemade dinner in under 30 minutes. Let it cook until the chicken is cooked through. Add the chicken back into the skillet and stir to coat it in the sauce. Cook for about a minute, then add in the sauce. Remove the chicken from the skillet.Ĭombine: Add the remaining oil to the skillet and add the green onions, ginger, and red pepper flakes. Cook until it is browned – don’t worry about it being cooked all the way through, as it will finish cooking at the end. Heat oil in a skillet, (or a wok, if you have one!), and add the chicken. Make the Sauce: Making the sauce is as simple as mixing everything together – the brown sugar, hoisin sauce, rice wine vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce and water.Ĭook the Chicken: Combine the chicken and the cornstarch in a ziplock bag and shake to coat the chicken.

It is both sweet and salty, and really elevates a lot of recipes (like this Hoisin Glazed Chicken!) You should be able to find it at most grocery stores.

Most sources say that the recipe is named after General Zuo Zongtang (also known as Tso Tsung-t’ang), who was a military leader in Hunan in the 1800s. I always find it interesting when a recipe’s origin is not known, or if there are multiple versions of the story out there. In fact, it takes me longer to make the rice than it does to make this chicken! What is General Tso Chicken? And second, because it is so easy that dinner can be ready in 30 minutes. First, because it is a healthier version of General Tso Chicken. And I love this recipe for a couple of reasons. I am a sucker for a good take out Chinese recipe made at home.
